Claudia Yu is a Hong Kong Chinese artist living and working in London. She is predominantly an oil painter, who also explores 3D and digital mediums. After completing her MA in Fine Art at Oxford Brookes University, Claudia subsequently moved to London to pursue a career in art, while working alongside various renowned British artists. Claudia is drawn to the rudimental principle of art as ‘mimesis’. In order to understand her own fascination with portraying reality, she explores the mediation process of image creation in her paintings, rather than the subject matter that is being portrayed. Particularly within the contemporary landscape of artificial intelligence, Claudia is interested in adopting image generation as a tool to explore the capabilities of the computer, but more importantly its limits: the intrinsic value of the physical act of painting – the human quality. By working with AI technology, which is so antithetical to the physicality of humans, her work aims to highlight the contradiction between painting and technology, humans and machines.
