Dr. Marlen Yan
marlenyan@quinnemanuel.comDr. Marlen Yan is a German qualified attorney (Rechtsanwältin) and Counsel in Quinn Emanuel’s Mannheim office. She was admitted to practice in 2010.
Marlen focuses on IP litigation with a particular emphasis on patent litigation. Since joining the firm in 2010, Marlen has represented national and international clients in a number of cases covering a wide range of technologies, i.e. IT, telecommunications, automotive and biotech.
She has in depth expertise in various technical fields, but in particular in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life science industry involving matters with cross-border aspects coordinating multiple parallel foreign litigations.
Marlen graduated from Humboldt University of Berlin before starting her legal clerkship at the Kammergericht (Appellate Court) Berlin. She holds a doctorate degree (Ph.D.) in law with a thesis examining the Unified Patent Court and its governing legal framework. She also obtained an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from the Technical University of Dresden and Strasbourg University (France).
Marlen has represented clients before the major German patent infringement courts (Duesseldorf, Mannheim and Munich) at district court and appellate level and in nullity proceedings before the German Patent Court and the Federal Supreme Court.
Legal 500 has ranked Marlen as a “Recommended Lawyer” for patent litigation in Germany from 2023 to 2025. IAM Patent 1000 ranked her as a “Recommended Individual (Bronze)” for patent litigation (infringement) in Germany in their 2024 rankings, saying that Marlen is “a collaboratively minded lawyer and highly adept problem solver who goes above and beyond to score client-defined wins.”
