On my first day of the summer program, I had lunch with my mentors and got to hear about their exciting work. By that evening, I was working on their cases. One of these cases was a pro bono employment discrimination case with some novel twists and turns. I got to meet our client, draft a motion for sanctions, and attend the settlement conference. Within the first few weeks, I had attended numerous federal district court hearings. The associates on the case made me feel like a valuable addition to the team, and they encouraged me to draft pivotal motions. Some firms encourage you to learn by observing top-notch attorneys; at Quinn, those attorneys hand you the reigns. Overall, the Quinn attorneys I worked with were truly excited about their work—and I found that I grew enthralled with it too. I can’t wait to return as a full-time associate and dig into more.

I received real, substantive work from my very first day in the QE office. I was paired with an associate who gave me clear instructions on what to research and how to present my findings to him. While the work was on a tight timeline, I felt like I was a valued part of the team from the very beginning. I researched New York state case law and legislative history and provided written work to that attorney on my first day. Later, once we had completed the research process, I discussed my research with the Partner overseeing the project. He was engaged and interested in what I had to say and even included some of my research findings in his email to the client outlining our team’s legal conclusions and recommendations. Quinn Emanuel is a firm where I felt like I got the hands-on experience that I wanted out of my summer associateship.

2024 Washington, D.C. Summer Associate

During my summer at Quinn Emanuel, I had a more well-rounded, authentic experience than I could have anticipated when initially applying to firms. While applying, I worried that I would land at a firm that would lock me into a practice area right away and have me spend my summer socializing with my future colleagues without doing any work. That was not the case here. I came to Quinn with a strong interest in white collar criminal defense, so I was asked to do real work for cases of that nature starting week one. Then, by the middle of the summer, I found myself accepting an opportunity to draft a client memo for a sports litigation case. Later in the summer, I was asked to draft a motion to strike for a patent case. The diversity in cases that I experienced was no coincidence- the summer program was intently organized to allow great exposure to the various practice areas. For instance, we would have summer partner chats once or twice each week to hear about different practices. Further, partners and associates would often take us out to lunch and attend our summer associate activities, like bowling, for us to have more informal conversations about their litigation experience. I am extremely satisfied with my decision to join Quinn Emanuel for my summer experience.

As my partner mentor put it, Quinn is a “choose your own adventure” kind of firm. As a summer at Quinn, I felt encouraged to choose which assignments I was interested in. This enabled me to work on cases regarding entertainment law, first amendment issues, and applications for asylum. I prepared witness outlines and wrote the entire first draft of a brief. I was a participating member in meetings with partners and clients. And just as the work experience was invaluable, so was bonding with my fellow summers during events like the Hampton’s Day and trapeze class.

The best thing about working in the Miami office is the people! Besides being brilliant lawyers, the people in the office are kind and generous with their time. I learned a lot this summer and truly felt like part of the team. The office has a variety of interesting and unique cases. I had substantive assignments, including drafting motions, conducting research, and helping edit briefs. I got to go to court to observe the lawyers in action very closely. I was also able to attend depositions, and client meetings. Associates and partners took the time to mentor and help me improve. We also went to many fun social events and got to try the best restaurants in Miami.

Before the summer, I never thought I’d enjoying working at a “Big Law” firm. But Quinn Emanuel changed my mind. Quinn has no bureaucracy and no frills. Instead, it has merit, competition, and collaboration. On my very first week in the office—while my friends at other law firms were doing various mandatory trainings—I was asked to help with a case that made front page news nationwide. I also had the opportunity to do meaningful research for trials and appeals in state and federal courts and even the Supreme Court. At Quinn Emanuel, I got to do a breadth of legal research, write memoranda, draft briefs, and plenty of other things all in an environment that empowers its attorneys and sets them up for success.

My favorite part about Quinn is its dedication to developing the skills of their junior attorneys. In less than 10 weeks I attended a mediation, deposition, and arbitration. However, these experiences were just some of many. I also participated in the summer mock trial; it was truly an unforgettable experience. For a week, under the guidance and support of the partners, I learned new skills, applied the new skills, and received feedback. This culture is fostered by all people, including John Quinn. Even with his incredibly busy schedule, I was fortunate enough to not only complete an assignment for John, but I was also able meet with him and get constructive feedback.

I have always wanted to be a trial lawyer, and being a summer associate at Quinn has allowed me to see how that dream can be a reality. From drafting and filing dispositive motions to preparing the deposition outlines of company executives, this summer has pushed my abilities and exposed me to the reality of what it means to be a trial lawyer. Being surrounded by litigators who always work with trial in mind has taught me how important it is to be part of a team with a clear goal. Every assignment that I worked on, from researching damages models for potential cases to writing memos to be given to clients, were carefully crafted to both answer the question and create a position most favorable throughout litigation at trial. But even more than the real and substantive work that I worked on over the summer, the QE experience has taught me that I am more capable than I previously thought. It has been a privilege to be part of a team of extremely intelligent, capable, and genuine people. As I begin to craft my legal career, I have is no doubt that QE is the best training grounds for me to become a trial litigator.

My two summers at Quinn Emanuel’s NorCal offices were extremely enriching and gave me exposure to the litigation world in a manner that I did not expect. From getting to go to trial, witnessing depos, hearings, multiple arbitrations- Quinn allowed me to experience all of it. What really made Quinn stand out to me was the type of assignments given to Summers. On day one of the summer you are given assignments that make real impacts on cases and are allowed to pitch in as though you are a real associate. Your opinion is given equal weight even as a Summer, which was extremely encouraging and helped me learn at a speed I never expected. A summer at Quinn means growth, challenge and camaraderie. From the familial vibe in the Silicon Valley office to the SF Summer associate bullpen, I was able to make friends and build meaningful relationships that have lasted well past each summer, all while getting to put what I learned in the classroom to work for a courtroom setting.

This summer at Quinn Emanuel, I dove into high-stakes litigation from day two, attending an arbitration on trade secrets. Later, I assisted associates with preparing the outline for a deposition and participated in the prep sessions, which deepened my understanding of legal strategies. My mentors were particularly supportive, frequently making time to speak with me, adding me to important matters, and providing ample shadowing opportunities, including attending a trial during my last week. This season was full of enriching experiences that provided a profound insight into the life of a litigator.
